With a traditional implant, the post is placed in the jawbone and left to heal before the final tooth is attached. With a same-day implant, the implant and a temporary tooth are placed together. You walk out with a tooth in place while the implant heals underneath.
The temporary tooth is just that, temporary. Once healing is complete, it is replaced with your final, custom restoration. The same idea can apply to a full arch, where a temporary set of teeth is placed at the visit.
It is not right for everyone, and we will tell you honestly if it is not right for you.
When we say wait
Dr. Kwon only recommends a same-day implant when it will hold up to the same long-term standard as a traditional one. If it will not, he would rather wait than risk your result.
Not qualifying does not mean you cannot have an implant. It usually means a staged approach, where the implant heals first and the final tooth follows. It is a well-established way to replace a tooth, and for many patients it is the better path.
Dr. Kwon, an implant surgeon who teaches implant surgery, makes this call for every patient, and he explains his reasons so you can decide with confidence.
Same-day placement depends on factors that only an exam and imaging can show.
Bone quality
The implant must sit securely in the bone from the moment it is placed. Thin or soft bone may not hold a tooth right away.
Gum health
Healthy gums protect the implant as it heals. Active gum disease or infection usually needs treatment first.
Your bite
A new tooth shares the work of chewing. Heavy bite forces, clenching or grinding can stress a healing implant too early.
If a same-day approach is not right for your mouth, you still have good options. Our dental implants overview explains the standard staged path, from imaging to your final restoration.
The process
What the visit looks like.
Consultation and scans
We review your health history, examine your teeth and gums, and take 3D imaging. This is where we find out whether same-day placement is an option, and what your bone, gums and bite will support.
Placement day
The area is numbed, the implant is placed and your temporary tooth is attached.
Healing
The implant bonds with the bone over several months. We check your healing at follow-up visits.
Final restoration
Your temporary tooth is replaced with your custom crown, bridge or teeth.
Common questions
Same-day questions.
Is a same-day implant as strong as a traditional one?
When it is recommended, it is held to the same long-term standard. If it cannot be, we will recommend a staged implant instead.
Do I get my final tooth the same day?
No. You receive a temporary tooth. The final crown, bridge or set of teeth follows after the implant has healed.
What if I do not qualify?
A traditional staged implant is a well-established option, and often the better path for patients who need bone or gum preparation first.
Does it cost more?
Cost depends on your case. We give you a written estimate, and you can read about coverage on our insurance and financing page.
Can it be done for a full arch?
In some cases, yes. A temporary set of teeth can be placed at the visit, depending on your bone and bite. Your scans decide.
