Same-day implants: who qualifies
For the right patient, an implant and a temporary tooth can happen in a single visit. Here is what decides whether you are that patient.

What a same-day implant is
A traditional implant is placed in the jawbone and then left to heal and bond with the bone before the final tooth is attached. A same-day implant shortens the visible part of that wait. The implant and a temporary tooth are placed in one visit, so you leave with a complete smile while the implant heals underneath.
The temporary tooth is just that: temporary. Once healing is complete, it is replaced with the final, custom crown. You can read a short overview in the same-day implants section of our services page.
Why bone quality matters
An implant needs a firm foundation. To hold a temporary tooth right away, the implant has to sit securely in the bone from the moment it is placed. If the bone is thin, soft or has been reduced after a long period without a tooth, the implant may not be stable enough to be used right away. Imaging shows us what the bone looks like.
Why gum health matters
Healthy gums protect the implant as it heals. Active gum disease or infection around the site usually needs to be treated first. Your dentist will check your gums carefully before recommending any implant plan.
Why your bite matters
A new tooth has to share the work of chewing with the teeth around it. If your bite puts a lot of force on the area, or if you clench or grind your teeth, a temporary tooth placed on a healing implant can be stressed too early. Dr. Kwon looks at how your bite comes together to decide whether a same-day approach is safe.
Why a careful dentist sometimes says no
It can be disappointing to hear that same-day treatment is not the best choice for you. But a careful dentist would rather wait than risk the long-term result. Dr. Kwon only recommends a same-day implant when it will hold up to the same long-term standard as a traditional one. Other factors, such as certain health conditions or habits that slow healing, can also affect the decision, and your dentist will go over them with you.
If you are not a candidate
Not qualifying for same-day treatment does not mean you cannot have an implant. It usually means a traditional staged implant, where the implant heals first and the final tooth follows after. Some patients need a little preparation, such as treating gum problems, before an implant is placed. A staged approach is a well-established way to replace a tooth, and for many patients it is the better path.
How the decision is made
There is no checklist you can complete at home. Dr. Kwon decides from your scans, your exam and your health history at a consultation. You will hear a straight answer and the reasons behind it. To learn what that visit involves, read our guide to what to expect at an implant consultation.
