Dental implants
What to look for in an implant dentist
An implant is a surgical treatment with a long healing period. Here is how to judge who you want to trust with it.

A note on the word specialist
In United States dentistry, the word specialist usually means a dentist who completed a recognized specialty program, such as oral surgery or periodontics. Many general dentists also place implants after additional training. So instead of focusing on a title, it is more useful to ask about the training and experience of the person who will actually treat you.
1. Real implant training
Dental school covers the basics, but implant surgery takes added education. Ask where your dentist studied implants, whether they took advanced courses, and whether they teach or lecture on the subject. Teaching is not required, but it often means a dentist stays current.
2. Surgical experience
Ask how often your dentist places implants and handles complications such as thin bone. A dentist who is comfortable with extractions, bone grafts and sinus procedures can usually manage more situations without sending you elsewhere.
3. Proper imaging and planning
Good implant work starts with good information. Look for an office that uses 3D scanning to study your bone, nerves and sinuses before surgery. Our Stamford office has a CBCT scanner for this purpose. Careful planning helps place the implant where it will hold and look right.
4. Honest options
A trustworthy dentist explains all your choices, including bridges, dentures, and waiting, and tells you when an implant or a faster approach is not right for you. You should feel informed, not pressured.
5. Range of treatment
Some people need one tooth replaced. Others need several teeth, or a full arch. Look for an office that can discuss each, such as single-tooth implants and full-arch implants.
6. A team you feel comfortable with
You will see your dental team many times during treatment. Choose people who explain things clearly and make you feel at ease, and an office that is convenient for you to reach.
7. Clear costs and payment options
Ask for a written plan and estimate, and ask what financing is offered. Our insurance and financing page explains how we handle this.
Dr. Kwon's background
Here is how our implant surgeon, Dr. GiTae Kwon, answers the training question. He graduated summa cum laude from New York University and earned his DDS at NYU College of Dentistry. In 2023 he completed a master's degree in Dental Implantology and Advanced Surgical Extractions at UniCamillus, Saint Camillus International University of Health Sciences, in Rome, where he is also a visiting professor.
He teaches implant surgery and wisdom tooth extraction to other dentists, teaches live implant surgery to fellow dentists in Tijuana, Mexico, and since 2024 has lectured on implant surgery and sinus augmentation across North America. You can read more on his profile.
Reviews
Reading patient reviews can help you get a feel for an office, but treat them as one piece of information alongside the questions above.
