Clear aligners
Clear aligners vs braces: which is faster?
Often, but not always. How long straightening takes depends far more on your teeth than on the brand of treatment.

The short answer
For many mild to moderate cases, clear aligners can be as quick as braces, and sometimes quicker. For more complex cases, braces can be the faster or only option. Nobody can promise a timeline without seeing your teeth, bite and X-rays.
How each works
Braces use brackets and a wire that are attached to your teeth and adjusted by an orthodontist over regular visits. Clear aligners use a series of removable, see-through trays, each moving your teeth a small step. You switch to the next aligner on a schedule, and we check your progress along the way.
What changes treatment time
- How far your teeth need to move. Small changes take less time than major ones.
- Your bite. Some bite problems respond better to braces, sometimes with other appliances.
- How you wear them. Aligners work only when worn nearly all day. Skipping hours slows progress.
- Your biology. Teeth move at different speeds in different people.
- Follow-up. Keeping your appointments helps keep treatment on track.
When braces may be the better choice
If your teeth are very crowded or rotated, or your bite needs significant correction, braces can offer more control. It is better to choose the approach that gets a good result than the one that sounds quicker.
What else to weigh
Speed is only one factor. Aligners are nearly invisible and removable, so you can eat normally and clean your teeth easily. Braces cannot be taken out, so they need a careful diet and extra cleaning. After either treatment, you will usually wear a retainer to keep your teeth where they are.
Everyday life during treatment
With aligners, you take them out to eat and drink anything other than water, then brush before putting them back in. With braces, you avoid sticky and hard foods and learn to clean around the brackets. Think about which routine you can keep up for the whole treatment, because that matters as much as the speed.
Retainers matter either way
No matter which treatment you choose, teeth tend to drift back if they are not held in place. A retainer is part of the plan, and wearing it as directed protects the time and effort you put in. Ask us what schedule we recommend for you.
Why timelines vary so much
You may hear different timelines from friends who straightened their teeth. That is normal, because two people can start with similar looking smiles and still need very different movement. Spacing, crowding, rotated teeth and the position of your jaw all play a part.
A few practical habits can help you finish on time with aligners. Wear them as directed, change them on schedule, and bring them to your visits. If a tray does not fit, tell us rather than waiting, because we can usually fix it quickly.
