What counts

Common dental emergencies.

When in doubt, call. We can help you decide whether you need to be seen right away.

What we do

Treatment that gets you out of pain.

  1. Call us first

We will tell you what to do until you arrive and schedule you as soon as possible.

  2. Find the source

Once we find the source, we treat it. We explain your options before we begin.

  3. Treat it

That may mean a filling or crown to repair damage, a root canal for an infected tooth, or splinting a loose or knocked-out tooth to the neighbors so it can heal.

  4. If a tooth cannot be kept

If a tooth is too damaged to keep, we may recommend extraction and talk with you about replacing it.

Before your visit

Until you arrive.

These tips are general. They do not replace a call to the office, so phone us first and we will guide you.

First aid

  • Toothache or broken toothRinse gently with lukewarm salt water, use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek for swelling, and save any pieces of tooth.
  • Knocked-out adult toothPick it up by the crown, not the root. If it is clean and you can, gently place it back in the socket. Otherwise keep it in milk or in your saliva, and get to us fast, because time matters.
  • Knocked-out baby toothDo not push it back in. Bring the tooth and call us.
  • Lost crown or fillingKeep it, call us, and avoid chewing on that side. A temporary filling material from a pharmacy can protect the tooth until your visit.

Emergency room or dentist

  • Go to the emergency roomGo to the emergency room, or call 911, for trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, a broken or dislocated jaw, or a serious wound to the face or mouth. For most other dental problems, a hospital can only offer pain relief and send you to a dentist.
  • Call us for everything elseFor everything else, call us first. We will tell you what to do until you arrive and schedule you as soon as possible. Ask about cost when you call, or see insurance and financing.

Common questions

Emergency questions.

What is a dental emergency?

Severe pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, swelling, a lost crown or filling, or bleeding that will not stop. When unsure, call.

Should I go to the ER?

Only for trouble breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding, a jaw injury or a serious facial wound. Otherwise call us.

How quickly can I be seen?

We often see patients in pain the same day. Call the office nearest you.

What if I knock out a tooth?

Act quickly. Handle it by the crown, keep it moist in milk or saliva, and call us right away.

How do I manage pain until I arrive?

A cold compress and a salt water rinse help many people. Ask us before taking medication, and follow the package directions.

Are emergency visits expensive?

Cost depends on what is needed. We explain it before treatment. See our insurance and financing page.
