Choosing a dentist

How to know who is a good dentist

You cannot judge a dentist from a list. You can judge them by a handful of qualities, and most of them are easy to spot once you know what to look for.

Why it is hard to tell

Most of us cannot judge the technical side of dentistry, so we look for other signs. The good news is that the same qualities show up again and again in dentists patients trust. They are about how a dentist treats you as much as what they do.

Here are the qualities to look for.

Qualities of a good dentist

  • They listen. They ask what is bothering you and let you finish.
  • They teach. They show you what they see and explain your options, so you can make the decision.
  • They respect your time and money. Appointments run on schedule, and costs are clear before treatment.
  • They do not push. They recommend what you need, and they say plainly what can wait.
  • They learn your history. Treatment is built around you, not a standard script.
  • They follow up. They check on you after treatment and remind you about regular care.
  • They keep a clean office. Sterile, orderly and well run.
  • They use modern tools. Digital imaging and scans help them plan accurately.
  • They work well with their team. A calm, friendly staff usually means better care for you.

A few things that do not tell you much

A fancy waiting room, a big advertising budget or a long list of treatments does not prove skill. Neither does a claim that someone is the top dentist in town, since no one can measure that. Look instead at training, communication, clear costs and how you are treated from the first phone call.

Where to look for evidence

Ask friends, family and your doctor who they see and why. Read patient reviews on several sites and look for patterns, such as comments about gentle care, clear explanations or fair prices. A dentist who shows real before-and-after photos, with patient consent, is showing you their work. Our own smile gallery is an example.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What training do you have in the treatment I need?
  • How do you decide between saving a tooth and replacing it?
  • Will I get a written estimate and a plan before treatment?
  • What do you do for emergencies?
  • What payment options and insurance plans do you accept?

A good office welcomes these. If you get vague answers or a sales pitch, take note.

What we offer at our practice

Dr. GiTae Kwon is an implant surgeon who teaches implant surgery to other dentists, and he is known for explaining what he sees, what he recommends and why. Dr. Byungchul Park is known for gentle, comfort-first care. We check your benefits before your visit and give you a written estimate before treatment. See the doctor page for more on how Dr. Kwon works.

A good dentist becomes a long-term partner

Regular checkups with a dentist you trust protect your teeth and your wallet. Over years, a dentist who knows you can spot changes early, explain them calmly and plan treatment around your life. That relationship, more than any ranking, is the sign of a good dentist.
