Choosing a dentist

How to choose a local dentist in Stamford, CT

A good dentist is more than a place to get your teeth cleaned. Think of it as choosing a dental home for routine care and for emergencies.

Start with what matters to you

Before you compare offices, decide what you need. Do you want a dentist for the whole family? Are you worried about pain or anxiety? Do you need evening or weekend appointments? Do you have insurance, or will you pay on your own? Your answers narrow the list quickly.

Practical things to check

  • Location. A dentist you can reach easily is a dentist you will see regularly. Check for parking and transit.
  • Hours. Look for times that fit your schedule, including Saturdays. Our Stamford office is open Saturdays and offers complimentary parking on site.
  • Insurance. Confirm that the office takes your plan, or ask what out-of-network benefits you might have. Our Stamford office accepts many plans and also accepts Medicaid through HUSKY Health for children and adults.
  • Emergency care. Ask what happens if you break a tooth on a Sunday or wake up with pain.
  • Communication. Notice whether the office returns calls, answers questions clearly and can help if English is not your first language.

Look at training and learning

Dentists in Connecticut must be licensed, and you can confirm a license with the state. Beyond that, ask about additional training in the treatments you may need. Dentists who keep learning tend to bring newer, more precise methods into their work.

At our practice, Dr. GiTae Kwon, DDS MSc, studied at NYU College of Dentistry and earned a master's degree in Dental Implantology and Advanced Surgical Extractions. He also teaches implant surgery to other dentists. Dr. Byungchul Park, known for gentle, comfort-first care, has practiced in Connecticut since 2015. You can read more about Dr. Kwon on his page.

Pay attention to the first visit

The office itself tells you a lot. Is it clean and calm? Does the team greet you warmly and explain what will happen? Does the dentist listen before they start talking about treatment? Are you shown what is going on in your mouth, and are options explained without pressure?

A good dentist separates what needs treatment now from what can wait. If you feel rushed into expensive work, it is fine to take a day or ask for a second opinion.

Ask about costs early

A good office is upfront about fees. Ask for a written estimate, ask which parts insurance is expected to cover and ask about payment plans. At our practice we check your benefits before your visit and give a written estimate before treatment. Our Stamford office also has a $150 new patient special, and Cherry payment plans with 0% financing for 12 to 18 months are available to qualified applicants. See insurance and financing for the details.

Red flags to watch for

Be wary of an office that pushes extra treatment you did not ask about, cannot explain why something is needed, or leaves you with no written plan. A messy waiting area, long unexplained delays and a team that seems rushed or dismissive are also worth noticing. One of these may be a bad day. A pattern is a reason to look elsewhere.

Build a long-term relationship

The aim is a dentist you will stay with for years. That relationship pays off when something goes wrong, because the team already knows your history. Look for a practice that focuses on prevention, teaches you how to look after your teeth and treats you as a partner.
